Upon arriving in Seville we were greeted by blue skies. Finally some good weather. Sun, we took you for granted. Seville is the capital of the province of Andalucia, and as such is a fair sized city. And I don’t know if it was the weather or what, but the whole town had a bright feel about it. Home of Flamenco and bull fighting, too-or so we’d heard. But then for reasons unknown (well, more than likely because we were feeling cheap), we left without seeing either one.

セビリアに 着くと、こちらも晴天。やっとお天気に恵まれてきた。久しぶりのお日様はとてもありがたい。セビリアはアンダルシア州の州都だけあって、かなり大きな街。 お天気のせいかもしれないけれど、街の雰囲気も明るい。フラメンコと闘牛もここが本場なんだとか。貧乏性のせいで、どちらも見ずに通り過ぎてしまったけど。

What did we accomplish here? Why digging a few local gems (bars and taverns), of course. Seville’s spoilt for choice on this score. Just duck in to a small lane off a street and you’re greeted with many nice, small bars serving up fried fish, salted beans, and the like. And while it’s not always service with a smile, it’s quick and efficient. Think corner pub but with good food.

セビリアでやっ たことと言えば、やっぱり地元のバル開拓。で、結論。セビリアにはおいしいタパスを出す安いバルやタベルナが多い。ちょっと路地に入れば、魚のフライとか 塩豆とかをつまみながらお酒が飲める店が結構あるし、また従業員の、あの愛想のない態度、でも仕事はさくさくと手際よくやるところが、たまらなくいい。日 本の、サラリーマンが仕事の帰りに立ち寄るような、高架下の小さな焼鳥屋と通じるものがある。やっぱりどの国もオヤジ店はいいね～。

For touristy stuff, the big attractions we visited here were the Cathedral of Seville, its bell tower, the Giralda, the Torre del Oro tower, and the Plaza de Espana. We finished them off quite nicely without even entering one of them. These days our desire for sightseeing has been significantly on the wane. I guess that’s just the way it goes-the longer the trip, the less zest you have for taking it all in. There are only so many World Heritage Sites, etc. that you can take in with all the enthusiasm of your first drunk. And then there is the just getting plain tired of being the tourist at the tourist spot. For us, catching a glimpse of everyday life has become much more interesting, perhaps because we are coming to long for it. And so that’s why we are much more on the lookout for local bars and restaurants. It’s not JUST because we are more interested in partying.

セビリアでの観光は、16世紀に完成した「セビリア大聖堂」、元々モスクのミナレットだった「ヒラルダの塔」、街を流れるグアダルキビール川沿いの「黄金の塔」、そしてスペイン広場。 どれにも入場せず、外から眺めるだけで観光は終了。最近、観光への意欲がかなり薄れてきています。はい。長期にわたって旅行をしていると、徐々に感動が薄 れてくるみたい。ありがたいことに、毎月、いや毎週のように世界遺産や歴史ある建築物を観ることができるというのに、感動はどんどん薄れてくる。というよ りは、「観光スポット」というもの自体に飽きてきたのかもしれない。私たちにとっては、普通の人たちの生活を垣間見ることができるような場所の方が断然面 白いし、いい思い出になる気がする。そう、だから私たちは地元人の集まる店にこだわっているんです。ただお酒が飲みたいだけではありませんよ。念のため。

From Seville we headed by train to Cordoba (funny, I always thought that was just a car until now). Turns out they named a town after it. Cordoba was of course the erstwhile capital of the Umayyad Caliphate, and as such much Muslim architecture remains. Most representative is the Mezquita, the great Cathedral of Cordoba and former mosque. It was of course first built as mosque (but only after the Muslim rulers expropriated and demolished the church that first stood there), and later transformed into a church after the Reconquista (reconquest) of Spain. Somewhat strange then is the fact that this place is still called “Mezquita”, which means mosque. The splendor of the place is evident upon first entering (for some reason entrance was free that day) as you are faced with a forest of Arab-style arched columns adorned in beautiful red and white stripes. You couldn’t be blamed for thinking that you were in a mosque; that is, until you reach the central chapel in all of its European grandeur and splendor. At the same time, though, the transition is seamless and just adds to the attractiveness of the building. More, within the building there is still evidence of the basilica of San Vincent which was destroyed in order to build the mosque, putting in question to the supposed benevolence of Muslim rulers at the time. At any rate, one thing’s for sure: there’s a lot of history here.

セビリアから電車でコルドバへ。コルドバはかつてイスラム勢力がこの地を支配していた時代に首都だったこともあり、イスラム建築が残っている。その代表的なものがメスキータ。 メスキータは「モスク」という意味で、イスラム時代に建てられた。その後の国土回復運動（レコンキスタ）でキリスト教勢力が再びこの地をイスラムから取り 戻した後、このモスクの建物は教会として転用されることに。なので、正確に言えば、今ここをメスキータ（モスク）と呼ぶのはちょっとおかしい。中に入る と、アーチで繋がった「円柱の森」にまず圧倒される。この円柱の数はすごい。赤茶色のストライプがなんともアラブっぽく、モスク時代の名残がかなり強く感 じられる。でも教会の中央部には西洋式の巨大な教会堂があり、この組み合わせが何とも不思議な雰囲気を醸し出している。興味深いのは、モスクが建てられる 前に、この場所に教会があったという事実。つまり、この場所は、教会→モスク→教会　という数奇な運命をたどってきたというわけ。

Almost forgot: here too we did our best to find all the local spots we could. The best being the Tavern San Miguel. This place is just around the corner from San Miguel square away from the heavy touristy area. Its walls are perfectly decorated with pictures of famous bull fighters and legs of ham, and it is packed with lively locals. The food was cheap and good, and the beer even better. Cordoba, we hardly knew ya.

もちろん、コル ドバでも地元バルやタベルナを堪能。一番良かったのは、「タベルナ・サン・ミゲル」というお店。サンミゲル広場の一角にある雰囲気のいいタベルナで、壁に は闘牛士の写真がびっしりと飾られ、豚の足（ハム）がぶら下がり、地元人で賑わっていた。内臓料理もうまかったし、ビールもうまかった。もう最高。

For practical purposes our trip about the Iberian Peninsula really ended here. After this we made back to Barcelona after one overnight in Madrid to await departure of our ship to Brazil.

イベリア半島をめぐる旅もこれで終了。あとはマドリード経由でバルセロナに戻り、ブラジル行きの貨物船を待つだけ。
