After a night train from Nice followed by two other connections we finally arrived midday at Barcelona’s Sants Station. Sants station is a very large and very modern railway station commensurate with a large European city-it had been a while since either of us had visited such a place and we were excited. We soon made our way to our hostel downtown via Barcelona’s impressive subway system direct from the railway station. The network is huge and getting around is a breeze. A one-trip ticket is 1.30 Euro; 1-day, 5 Euro; and a 2-day 10 Euro, but as the Euro has been really weak against the Yen (about 123 Yen to 1 Euro), it worked out to be quite cheap. Problem is the gate reader often refuses to recognize 1 and 2-day tickets for no apparent reason. Add to that the fact that there is never any staff member at or near the gates, and you find yourself buying the relatively expensive one-trip tickets. Thanks for nothing!

ニースから夜行やら急行やらを乗り継いて、お昼ごろバルセロナのサンツ駅に到着。サンツ駅は近代的で巨大な鉄道駅で、久々に先進国の大都市に来たという実感がわいてきて心もウキウキしてきた。早速、駅からメトロに乗って市内中心部のホステルに向かう。バルセロナでは地下鉄（メトロ）網が発達していて、路線数も多く、市内の移動には欠かせない交通手段。メトロは1回乗ると1．3ユーロ（約160円）、1日券が5ユーロ（約600円）、2日券が10ユーロ（約1300円）。最近はユーロ安だから本当に助かる。でも、1日券や2日券は改札機に差し込んでも正しく読み取ってくれず、改札ゲートが開かないことがしょっちゅう。駅にスタッフがいないことも多いので、止むを得ず1回券を買って改札をぬけたことが何度かあった。ああもったいない。

Good food, but the weather left something to be desired

食事は美味しかったけど、とにかく寒かった！

It was all the more annoying as we had work to do in Barcelona: applying for and receiving our Brazilian visas. Silly us, we thought our visa troubles were behind us, but we only found out that we needed visas for Brazil a few days earlier. More, upon further investigation, we found several Web sites testifying that the application for the visa required all kinds of documents and at least a 2-3 week wait time for issuance, leaving us fearing another everyday-to-the-embassy-for-a-week to tussle with officialdom experience like we had in India with the Pakistan and China consulates, or another bout of let’s-see-how-long-we-can-make-the-foreigners-wait like we had with the Iranian and Turkmenistan embassies in Uzbekistan. So no sooner had we confirmed the documents that were needed than did we deposit our bags at the hostel and make haste for the Brazilian consulate. We got there a little after 1pm, and, of course, the consulate was already closed (operating hours being a comfortable 09:30~13:00). The next day we readied our documents again and went early. For those interested, the necessary documents (at least for this consulate) are:
(1) Tickets proving both entry to Brazil (unclear why they require this) and onward travel to another country;
(2) a recent bank statement proving sufficient funds (roughly USD 2,500); and
(3) a passport-size photo.
We of course already had the freighter tickets to Brazil; for onward travel found an e-ticket that was fully refundable within 24 hours (Lan Airlines); and for the bank statement we tried our luck again here with a simple e-banking printout. In fact, based on our previous experience, we were quite concerned about the bank statement, but we lucked out here, too-the lady at the counter took it whilst barely stifling a yawn. Not only that, but we were told that we could pick up our visas in just 4 days!

バルセロナでは大切な仕事があった。それはブラジルビザの取得。私たちはブラジル入国にビザが必要だということをなんと数日前に知ってあわてていた。調べてみると、申請に必要な書類も多いらしく、ビザが出るまで2～3週間と書いているサイトもあったので、インドのデリーでパキスタンと中国のビザを取ったときのようにまた毎日大使館や領事館に通い、ウズベキスタンでトルクメニスタンとイランのビザを取った時のようにひたすら待つことになるのかと心配していた。申請に必要な書類を確認したかったので、バルセロナの宿に荷物を置くとすぐにブラジル領事館へ行った。でも例によって領事館の営業時間は短く、すでに午後1時に閉館していた。領事館には次の日に出直すことにして、色々なサイトに必要だと書かれていた書類の準備にかかる。ちなみに、必要な書類と言われているのは、（1）ブラジル入出国のためのバスや船や飛行機のチケット、（2）十分な残高（25万円以上）の残高証明書（銀行のスタンプが必要と書いているサイトもあった。ひえ～）、（3）証明写真1枚。入国する船のチケットはあるので、出国するための航空券を予約してeチケットを取り（24時間以内にキャンセルすると全額戻ってくるサイトで）、残高証明書はネットバンキングの残高ページをプリントアウトした。残高証明はプリントアウトだとたぶん受け入れられないだろうと予想していたけれど、ダメもとで翌日ブラジル領事館で用意した書類を見せると、なんとすんなり受領してもらえた。わーい！しかもビザは4日後に受け取れるという。あーよかった・・・。

We weren’t done yet, though. While waiting for the visas, we decided to take care of another nasty bit of business: the medical certificate of good health required for freighter travel. And so we went in search of an English-speaking doctor. In fact, the certificate required by the freighter company is really quite a simple document, requiring the doctor just to write “yes” and “no” in the right places. We had already done this once with a doctor in Japan before our freighter voyage from Taiwan to China. At that time the doctor quite reasonably just looked us over and wrote up the certificate. This time, however, the Barcelona doctor made us do a whole song and dance: an examination followed by a blood test and a chest X-ray at a different clinic, and a write up after the results came in. But we justified it as being a once a year thing and so not so bad, and went off to the clinic. It didn’t hurt, but, as such a certificate and examination is not covered by our insurance, the whopping 300 Euro (150 each) bill did sting quite a bit.

ビザを待つ間、今度はバルセロナから12月末に出航する貨物船に乗るのに必要な健康診断書を取るため、英語の通じるクリニックへ。診断書といっても、お医者さんに船会社からもらった専用用紙の質問に「はい」とか「いいえ」を記入してもらうだけの簡単なもの。前回の、台湾の高雄から中国の上海までの貨物船の時は、出発前に日本で用意した。このときは、問診だけで診断書を書いてもらえた。今回お願いしたバルセロナのお医者さんは、別のクリニックで血液検査とX線検査をやり、その結果を見てから診断書を書くという。面倒くさいけれど、まあ1年に1度の健康診断と思って翌日別のクリニックで検査してもらった。もちろん、この検査料・診断料は私たちの旅行保険ではカバーされていないので、請求額が心配だったけれど・・・やっぱり高かった。なんと1人150ユーロ！2人で300ユーロ！痛い、痛すぎる～。

With the visa and the medical certificate circus, we weren’t left with much time for sightseeing, but we made the best with what we had. In this vein, when you think Barcelona what come to mind is the great architect Antoni Gaudi and all the magnificent building he bequeathed to the people of Barcelona and the world. And first among them all has to be the Sagrada Familia, which although started in 1882 is still not complete-hence the giant cranes. I’ll spare you the details (since I don’t know them anyway), but suffice it to say that the pictures don’t do it justice-it is truly a work of genius. One note, though. From the pic you can see the two facades: 4 high steeples facing west and another four facing east. While these are impressive enough in their own right, you have imagine another even taller one right smack in the middle-this is the last tower that will complete the Sagrada Familia. The only question is: will you and I be alive to see it finished?

ビザや診断書にほとんど時間を取られたけれど、観光もそれなりに。バルセロナといえば、アントニ・ガウディの作品群。そして一番有名で壮大な建築物が、サグラダ・ファミリア（聖家族教会）。着工したのが1882年なので100年以上経っているけれど、この教会まだ建設中で、大きなクレーンがいっぱい動いている。実は13年前、学生時代にバルセロナに来たことがあって、もちろんサグラダ・ファミリアも見たけれど、その時と比べるとかなり工事が進んでいて、新しい部分もぐっと増えていた。現在は、ファサードが西側と東側にあって、その上に4本ずつ高い塔が建っている。それだけでも圧倒される高さなのに、これから真ん中にさらに高い塔が一本立つらしい。完成したサグラダ・ファミリア、生きている間に見れるかな。見れるといいけど。あ、そうそう、塔の中はエレベーターで昇れます。下りはらせん階段で。

We also visited some of Gaudi’s other famous works: Casa Milà, Casa Batlló, and Park Güell. In addition to the park itself, Park Guell also boasts a house, now a museum, in which Gaudi actually lived. Much of the fixtures, furnishings, and furniture inside were designed by Gaudi (in the case of the furniture, by Gaudi and/or his disciples), but you wouldn’t otherwise know going in, everything still has a very modern feel to it.

他にもガウディが設計したカサ・ミラ、カサ・バトリョ、グエル公園も見て回る。グエル公園内にはガウディが実際に住んでいた家が今博物館になっているので入ってみた。設備も、家具も、家具の備えけ方も、ガウディと彼の弟子がデザインしたものは、現代の私たちの目にも斬新で、そして素敵で、約100年前にデザインしたとはとても思えなかった。

But it’s not just Gaudi; there are many other breathtaking architectural works scattered throughout Barcelona. Not three blocks from our hostel there is the famous Hospital de Sant Pau-itself also a UNESCO World Heritage building still used as a hospital today and designed by a guy from Barcelona with a long name, Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The use of space, the domes, and the tile work have a unique flavour about them. While it does lack the Oomph factor of a Gaudi building, there’s something to be said for the image of a modern ambulance dropping off a patient at such a place.

バルセロナは他にも興味深い建築物がたくさん。宿の近くにあったサン・パウ病院は、20世紀初頭に建てられ、世界遺産でありながら、いまでも病院として機能している。ここはバルセロナ出身のリュイス・ドメネク・イ・モンタネール（長い！）が設計したもの。広い敷地内は複数の建築物があって、ドーム型の屋根やら、タイルを使った装飾やら、独特だった。でもインパクトとしてはやはりガウディに劣るというのが感想かな。それにしても100年以上前に建てられた歴史ある建物の前に、現代の救急車が停まっているのはかなり印象的だった。

Anyway, after 4 days we were able to pick up our visas, just as the lady said we could (how about that). And the 300-Euro-for-blood-tests-and-an-X-rays-even-though-we-didn’t-need-that doctor even let us know that he was going to send us the certificates by e-mail in short order. Relieved, we made for our next stop, Madrid.

さて、ブラジルビザの申請から4日後、無事にブラジルのビザをもらうことができた。診断書も数日後にお医者さんからメールで届く予定になっているし、一安心。さっそく、次の目的地マドリードへ出発した。
