Tel Aviv & Jaffa/テルアビブ＆ジャファ (2008/10/28~10/30)
We took the short bus ride to Tel Aviv and decided to stay here a couple of days. Though only an hour away from Jerusalem, Tel Aviv feels like it is a world away. It is a modern, European-like seaside city. And it has some great beaches. Even though it was the offseason, there were still quite a few sun worshipers and swimmers, not to mention the throngs of surfers.
エルサレムからバスに揺られテルアビブへ。ここで数日間滞在することにした。エルサレムからたったの1時間しか離れていないのに、テルアビブは全く違う世界のように感じる。近代的で、ヨーロッパのような海辺の街。しかも、ビーチが素晴らしい！オフシーズンとはいえ、太陽の光と海を目指してビーチに繰り出す人たちはまだ多い。もちろんサーファーもウジャウジャいる。
But the real difference here is the lack of religiousness that so permeates Jerusalem; it has a very secular feel to it. Perhaps because of this we both found Tel Aviv much more comfortable and enjoyable than Jerusalem.
でも、テルアビブが決定的にエルサレムと違う点は、宗教色がかなり薄いところ。世俗的な雰囲気。そのおかげか、わたしたちにとっては、エルサレムよりテルアビブのほうが居心地がよく、りラックスして楽しめた気がする。

Surf’s up, dude/サーファー、カッコいい！
It is still generally expensive, but there are some good deals to be had. Indeed, we were lucky enough to stumble upon one of Tel Aviv’s most famous lunch spots in town. The place is absolutely packed between 13:00 and 19:00. And with good reason: during these hours you can have a gourmet meal for only 20 Sh. (about 5 dollars). The only thing was that, due to its popularity, we were both somewhat worried about some bomb going off. So it was with some trepidation that we took a booth. But then you can’t go your whole life avoiding these kinds of places, can you?
エルサレムと同様、テルアビブも物価は高い。でも安いのになかなかいい店もあった。偶然にも、テルアビブで一番有名なランチ処を見つけたので入ってみた。外に行列ができるくらいの人気ぶりで、午後は1時から7時まで満員御礼状態。その人気の理由は、この時間帯ならたった20シュケル（約5ドル）で、おしゃれな店内でグルメなランチを食べられるから。でも、あまりにも人気があるので、爆弾テロの標的なんじゃないかという心配もあった。入口にはセキュリティがいるけど、やっぱり恐怖心はぬぐえないので、奥のブース席を選んだ。でも、テロが怖いからといってこんな場所を一生避けて生きていくなんて無理だよね。

We also took the opportunity to visit Old Jaffa, and ancient port city now part of Tel Aviv. Old Jaffa has a storied history, but unfortunately it seems that all that has been steam rolled over to make way for a souvenir-shop laden tourist-trail bus stop. There is almost nothing authentic left in the entire town. It’s really not even worth writing about except to say that if you are ever in Tel Aviv, do yourself a favour and skip the trip to Ye Olde Jaffa for a few more hours on the beach and a cold one.
ジャファ旧市街にも足をのばしてみた。ここは古代の港町で、今はテルアビブの一部となっている。ジャファ旧市街には名高い歴史もあるけれど、現在の姿は残念ながら、お土産屋さんが並び、大型観光バスが乗り付ける、真新しい空間へと作り変えられてしまっていた。町のどこを見ても、古代の名残は見当たらない。テルアビブに来たら、ジャファ旧市街はスキップして、その時間を使ってビーチで冷たいビールでも飲んでいた方がよっぽどいいと思う。

After Tel Aviv we rolled back to Jerusalem for a couple of nights before heading back to Amman so that we could pick up Arabic translations for our passports for our intended trip to Libya. For whatever loopy reason, the Libya government has decided that anyone entering Libya needs such a translation. We found that our embassies in Amman could do this, but a note of caution for any Canadians reading this blog: while the Japanese embassy is quite able to translate the bio page of a passport in a very reasonable 30 minutes, the Canadian embassy requires a staggering 3~4 days to accomplish the same thing. Go figure.
テルアビブのあと、またエルサレムに戻って数日間過ごし、そのあとアンマンへ戻った。アンマンではリビアのビザ取得に必要なパスポートのアラビア語翻訳を受け取ることにしていた。どんな理由か知らないが、リビア政府はパスポート情報ページのアラビア語翻訳がないヤツは国には入れん、とお達しを出したという。アンマンでは大使館でこの翻訳をやってもらえると知り、日本大使館、カナダ大使館に行ってきた。この件についてこのブログを読んでいるカナダ人のみなさんへ注意！日本大使館ではパスポートの個人情報ページの翻訳を、ものの30分でやってくれた（しかも無料）のに、カナダ大使館では同じ翻訳でも3～4日間かかるといわれた（そして有料、9JD：約15ドル）。なんてこと～。
