On 14 January, at Naha’s “New Harbour”, we boarded the ferry for Taiwan, and so commenced the start of our world trip. The trip to Keelung Harbour took about 22 hours by way of the Japanese islands of Ishigaki and Miyako. The ship itself was large and well provided for, but, contrary to the “fair sailing” reports we received, the passage was quite rough–Esshie was sick the whole time! Not much to do, but did I mention the beer vending machines?

A rarin’ to go/いよいよ、スタート！

Japanese immigration procedures occurred on board at Miyako–a few guys sitting at a desk wearing uniforms that screamed government. Nice enough though–whole thing was over in 2 minutes. Also at that time many Taiwanese boarded, changing the atmosphere of the boat–Japan to Taiwan, just like that.

And nothing but fair sailing from here!

Today we moved from Taipei to Taitung, on the East coast. Will write about that soon, but first a little about some tourism in Taipei.

Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall

May be hard to tell from the photos, but the size of the memorial is reminiscent of many of the edifices of the Soviet era that we saw in Russia. It is kind of out of place in today’s democratic Taiwan, and it is likely an object of mixed feelings for many–but then also fitting for the Generalissimo.

101/Taipei 101

Taipei 101 itself is not the only thing sky high, the admission price is in the clouds as well–a whopping 400 NT dollars. It does have its points, such as a great view and an elevator that whisks you to the 89th floor in less time that it takes the Kouenji New National Court elevator to take you to the 5th. But, really, at this price you may be better off to skip it and treat yourself at the night market.

Shilin Night Market

Like I said, head to the night market! Shilin’s is the largest in Taipei and there’s lots of eats all conveniently holed up under one roof. We were looking for some famous shops, but that didn’t stop us from filling our faces on the way–enough that we had our fill by the time we found what we were looking for.

Esshie drew a sacred lot. She received good news: a lot that portends the greatest happiness. Not a bad way to start off the trip, no? Even more, Esshie also visited a fortune teller from amongst the many lining the underpass in front of the temple, whereupon she was told that if her ciculation can be improved, much good will come of it. Whatever the believability factor, t’was interesting. Then again, she was also told that riches would come after 40–this we’re taking to the bank!

Took the train down the East coast from Taipei to Taitung. Truth be told, there did not seem to be much to do in Taitung, aside from going to the markets during the day. But we do want to give a hot tip to the business hotel we stayed at–600NT dollars for a decent ensuite room with broadband internet access and free breakfast. That price is only a little over what you usually pay at a hostel for a bunk double with dialup.

Like I said, there was not much on offer for nightlife in Taitung, but there is always Taiwan Beer, and if there’s a Family Mart about, which there was, there is a party to be had:

We arrived by train from Taitung to find a really quite appealing port city in Kaohsiung—the port from where we were to get on our China-bound freighter, the LT Cortesia. It is Taiwan’s second city, and has a very different vibe from the capital, Taipei. It is a much more “Taiwanese” city that Taipei as well.

Love River by day (top of page) and by night/

We stayed at the Kaohsiung 202, a hostel well situated in the centre and right near the “Love River”. There are good walking areas and markets nearby.

What is it with Taiwan and scooters?

We can’t say much more though as our stay was quite short, and the whole of the last day was spent waiting for our port agent to contact us and eventually get us to the port. Luckily, the agent eventually came through and arranged to have a taxi take us all the way to the exact location where the LT Cortesia was berthed. We are grateful for this since wandering about the world’s 6th largest port in search our vessel was not a prospect we relished.

On 24 January from Kaohsiung Harbour we boarded the German freighter “LT Cortesia” bound for China. Departure was “on or about the 24th”, and, indeed, while we were first told by the agent that the ship would be along side at 13:00, she did not come alongside until 21:30. No matter though, the agent was great and kept in contact with us at the hostel until she was alongside, at which time he sent a taxi for us that took us through the port directly to the ship.

First time on a freight for us, and as you can see by the pics, these things are ginormous (is that a word?). The terminal’s business is frieght and not passengers, and so we had to be quite careful of all the cranes lifting freight about us whilst we awaited the lowering of the gangway. Going up that rickety gangway was something else also. We were greeted aboard by the very able Captain and then after the paperwork were led to our cabin by the 2nd officer, who explained the safety regulations aboard along the way.

When you hear “freighter”, you don’t expect the Ritz, but the cabins really are first class. From our window we had a very good view outside and of the row upon row of containers. It was really a change from the economy accommodations we are used to–on top of an elevator, there is also a gym, sauna, and a pool!

There are three squares a day, all in the officers mess with the Captain and other officers, as well as the other passengers–in our case three others, two Swiss and one German. There is also tea time at 10:30 and 15:00.

While the officers were German, the crew appeared to be from all over–all of the crew we spoke to were from the Philippines. Like the officers, the crew were all very nice and greeted us whenever they came upon us. At the same time, though, it took us some time to aclimatise to the situation and fully enjoy the meals in the mess.

Traveling by frieghter is not a speedy business: while we boarded on the 24th, we did not leave port until 17:00 the next day. The loading and unloading of freight takes a lot of time! We then arrived at the port of Ningpo, China on the 26th. This was not our destination, but since we had no Chinese money, we took advantage of the bus arranged by the Captain for quick shore leave with the 3 other passengers and went into town (not actually Ningpo, but another town that I don’t know the reading for–the Chinese characters are 北倉) and got some Yuan from an ATM. There wasn’t any time for sightseeing, but then there did not appear to be any sights.

Port of Ningbo/

The LT Cortesia came alongside in Yanshan (port for Shanghai) at 03:00 on the 28th, but passengers can arrange to leave the ship whenever they wish, and we left at 11:00. This time though the arranged van wanted 100 US dollars to take each of us in–with the other 3 passengers that would have been a $500 pay day for this agent with this bonerattler of a bus. The other passengers refused, and we protested that since we were not coming back we should pay only half. The agent finally agreed and off we went.

In the end though, the agent was very helpful to get us through immigration and since it took almost 3 hours to make it, finally, to Shanghai proper, $50 a person is not terribly egregious. Actually, I do not know how we could get out of the port and through immigration if we elected to go, for example, by taxi. This may be easy in other ports, I do not know, but it appeared not an easy thing to do.

You might have heard about the bad weather that southern China experienced. We were unfortunately caught up in it, too, and during the Chinese Lunar New Year to boot. We arrived in Shanghai from passage aboard the LT Cortesia on 28 January, but did not get out until 5 February. You may be thinking, “well there are worse places to spend 9 days,” and you are no doubt right, but when it is freezing cold with rain, snow, and sleet all day it is hard to make the most of your journey and it seriously affects your mood. It did ours anyway.

Shanghai/上海

Since we are not taking any airplanes, we immediately sought out rail tickets to the south upon arrival in Shanghai. But being the Chinese New Year and all, we could only secure tickets for 8 February. We thought that was better than nothing, but then with the less than idyllic weather didn’t relish spending 10 days basically holed up in our hostel and so searched for long-distance bus tickets. Luckily, after waiting in a horrific line at the bus station and being able to communicate in writing only (Kanji really is convenient sometimes), we got some tickets to Guangzhou for 2 February and were feeling pretty proud of ourselves. Funny thing though, upon arriving at the bus station on the 2nd for our bus, we were greeted by a wall of police officers and a sign in Chinese that we understood to mean that buses to the south we canceled for that day and we should get our tickets refunded.

Normally, you would expect that you could keep you ticket and when service resumes you would be given priority in booking a new bus. Not the case, though. We had to get a refund for our tickets and come back to book tickets whenever they decided to start selling them again (something that was not made clear). We decided to come back the next moring, and lucky we did because tickets were on sale again and it seemed that the world had tilted such that every Chinese in China ended up in the bus station looking for tickets. In the end we were able to get two long-distance bus tickets to Guangzhou for 5 February. This time the bus station was open on the day of travel, so clear sailing, right? Wrong. The stated time of our departure was 13:10, which came and went without any posted notice of any kind. So, like everyone else, we slowly but surely moved our position to the front of the gate where the staff were so that we could ask the staff (rather yell at them and see if you can get a reaction of any kind) when, or if, the bus would come, and so that the staff would know our faces. We were told, again in writing, a number of things, but it became apparent that the bus was late–4 to 5 hours late. But since you don’t want to lose your place for fear of missing the time when the bus actually comes, we basically stood there and waited for 5 hours. Us, and almost everyone else. The bus did come, and lucky we were waiting at the gate and that one of the staff knew we were waiting, because the guy who came for people to Guangzhou was not one for waiting.

Where is the bus?/

Indeed, no sooner were we on the bus then we were hurtling though the rainy night at neck-break speed, horn blaring all the way. That said, the bus was nice. Most of the long-distance buses seem to be sleeper-berth buses, as this one was, and relatively new and modern. I had quite a nice sleep most of the way. More, the bus stops at canteen-type places were cheap but good food is on offer. My advice on these buses is to wait until the bus stops at these canteens to go to the washroom. There is a toilet on the bus, but it is really only for the adventurous.

One really good thing we would like to mention about Shanghai is the hostel we stayed at, The Shanghai Hiker Youth Hostel.

Beds in dormitories went for about 8 USD and double rooms about 25 USD.

One thing, though, the Internet connections available (both at provided PCs and through wireless) are finicky, so if this is a very important thing, you might need to reconsider.

We were in Hong Kong for 9 days, but made the most of it by obtaining our Indian and renewed China visas (China visas should be obtained in Hong Kong because you can get multiple entries and same day service), as well as arranging our on-ward China bus tickets and a new batch of Malaria pills (you can get Malarone and Doxycycline at the travel health centres in Hong Kong; a reservation is really not required, but a consultation fee is necessary). But just generally Hong Kong was a relief from Shanghai–from the travel agents to the staff at 7-eleven English is widely understood.

Probably the best thing about Hong Kong is the food. At all of the Chyachyantei’s (kind of a family restaurant, fast food joint, and coffee shop combined) both the food and the service was top notch. The best was “congee”, a kind of hot soup that you can have with twisted, donut-like bread (see pic). If you see a shop with this in the window, go there. And have a nice lemon tea to wash it down.

Congee/

There is not much space in Hong Kong (duh), but nevertheless the small size of the rooms available in guesthouses takes some getting used to, especially (for us anyway) the shower-toilet combination. Tough to shower when you can’t move your body!

Since it was still Chinese New Yer we ended up staying at the “USA” guesthouse. This was at first at the Mirador Mansions, but we asked for a room change and wound up at the the infamous Chungking Mansions. The “room”, more of a closet” stank to high heaven (somebody had puked there recently) and to make ti worst the shower-toilet combo was shared and lacked a door that closed. That was OK though since there was no hot water anyway. Bottom line: reserve early and make sure that the Mirador Mansion is the address of the reservation, and never, ever let them move you to the Chingking Mansions–even if they say, as they always do, that it is the same company.

Arrived in Macau on 11 February for a two-day stay. Came by ferry. Like Hong Kong, it was frigid, but no matter because we spent the whole first day and night in the casinos-Macau, Monte Carlo of the far east and all that. Well, I don’t know about Monte Carlo (yet), but it was all that for us.

A number of new, Vegas-style casinos have gone up lately, but we preferred the original Casino Lisboa, and its swanked-up new version, the Grand Lisboa. The Grand is absolutely huge-maybe thirty stories (mostly hotel on the top though) and a genuine Macau landmark. We tried our hand at the cheap “Big Small” tables. Esshie was very lucky at first: she won the price of our hotel in just thirty minutes! But the house always wins, and no sooner had we taken a break and hit the tables again did we break even. Well, honestly speaking, Esshie was still up whilst I was in deep, but that’s what’s good about traveling as a couple!

Grand Lisboa/

Did I mention the scantily-clad dancing girls performing atop the main bar? Truly a great time!

The next day was spent sightseeing, and while Macau is a small and very walkable place, there are lots of sights to see. The ruins of St Paul’s, you know, the remaining façade you see on all the postcards etc of Macau, are really stunning. I had to wonder though why the Chinese found it necessary to plant a cheap New Years display with those phony Olympic characters right in front of it. What is with those anyways? No one remembers the mascots for the Olympics, let alone 5 or 6 similarly plain-Jane characters.

St. Paul’s/

One place we really recommend in the old town is Café Kam Ma Lon. See the map below.

Old-fashioned Macanese café with tons of atmosphere. And they have kept the old booths-man, I love those things. Oh, the food’s pretty good, too (try the egg tarts and the hamburger-looking things). Aside from the old town itself, those are pretty much the highlights; if you have time to kill you can check out the museum at the top of the hill next to St Paul’s, but it is nothing extraordinary.

One last thing, always check what the minimum bet is, even on the cheap “Big Small”: it’ll get you every time.

We arrived in Nanning by night bus not really knowing where we were, and the first impression is of a relatively laid-back town, with the influence of being close to the border with Vietnam being closely felt. But more importantly, observant of the many prohibitive signs about, we noticed that almost nobody was hacking and spitting on the ground (a disgusting but usual scene). The shock of the loud throat clearing followed by the hacking and spitting on the ground (even on the subway) which we first experienced in China’s so-called showcase of modernity, Shanghai, never left us, and is probably one of the reasons why we loved Nanning so much.

Actually, there really isn’t much in particular to see in Nanning, but just walking about the town we were able to witness what appears to be a regular occurrence in Nanning: large groups of people (most middle aged) practicing their dance moves to pop music.
