You might have heard about the bad weather that southern China experienced. We were unfortunately caught up in it, too, and during the Chinese Lunar New Year to boot. We arrived in Shanghai from passage aboard the LT Cortesia on 28 January, but did not get out until 5 February. You may be thinking, “well there are worse places to spend 9 days,” and you are no doubt right, but when it is freezing cold with rain, snow, and sleet all day it is hard to make the most of your journey and it seriously affects your mood. It did ours anyway.

中国南部の悪天候についてはすでにご存じかと思う。あいにく我々もその天候に巻き込まれてしまい、しかもそれが旧正月の真っただ中。LT Cortesiaで上海入りしたのが1月28日だったけど、上海をやっと「脱出」できたのが2月5日だった。上海で9日間くらいいいじゃん、と思うかもしれない。もちろんその通りなんだけど、凍てつく寒さの中、雨、雪、みぞれが1日中降っていれば旅を楽しむ気分になれないし、テンションも下がるというもの。ひどい天候のおかげで、私たちのテンションは超低レベルだった。

We arrived in Nanning by night bus not really knowing where we were, and the first impression is of a relatively laid-back town, with the influence of being close to the border with Vietnam being closely felt. But more importantly, observant of the many prohibitive signs about, we noticed that almost nobody was hacking and spitting on the ground (a disgusting but usual scene). The shock of the loud throat clearing followed by the hacking and spitting on the ground (even on the subway) which we first experienced in China’s so-called showcase of modernity, Shanghai, never left us, and is probably one of the reasons why we loved Nanning so much.

いまいちどこか分からないまま香港から夜行バスで着いた南寧は、ベトナムとの国境が近いせいか、のんびりとした南国風の良い雰囲気。しかも、南寧市の規制なのだろうか、バスやホテルでは「痰を吐くと罰金」と書かれていて、街中でも痰を吐く人がほとんどいない。上海では「ガーッペ」の大合唱にうんざりしていたし、地下鉄の車内でも痰を吐く人をみてショックを受けたものだが、こんな素晴らしい街も中国にあるのね、とうれしくなってしまった。 (続きを読む…)

On 16 February we boarded a night train to Kunming from Nanning. To board a Chinese train everyone is herded into a waiting room, and there everyone has to wait, crowed like sardines. Don’t know if it is because Nanning doesn’t get much of the tourist trade or what, but we sore thumbs attracted many unwanted stares (often head to toe, and without any flinching even if eye contact is made).

2月16日、南寧から昆明行きの夜行列車に乗る。出発直前まで待合室からホームに行けないので、待合室はすさまじく混んでいる。外国人がよほど珍しいのか、私達のいでたちがよほど風変わりなのか、待合室では沢山の人たちから舐めるような好奇の視線を浴びた。

We arrived in Kunming by night bus from Nanning. Kunming apparently means “city of eternal spring”, or something like that. But it was cold, man, real cold. But that was OK because our purpose wasn’t really to sightsee so much as it was to organize onward tickets to Lhasa (Tibet) and to get our visas for Myanmar. A Chengdu travel agent told us that if we could get a permit for Tibet by February 25, then he would get us tickets trough to Lhasa from Chengdu for March 4. A Nepalese travel agent was organizing the permit and so we felt we could use the time to go to Myanmar and back-Kunming is the only close place in China with a Myanmar consulate.

南寧から夜行バスで昆明に到着。昆明は「永遠なる春の街」という意味らしいが、その意味に反してむちゃくちゃ寒い。でも、昆明には観光のために来たのではなく、チベットのラサまでのチケットの手配とミャンマービザ取得のためにきたので、寒さはそれほど問題なかった。ラサまでのチケットについて成都の旅行会社に連絡すると、チベット入境証を2月25日までに入手すれば、3月4日発成都－ラサのチケットを取れますよ、と言われた。チベット入境証はすでにネパールの旅行会社にお願いしていたので、ラサへ発つまでの時間を利用してミャンマーに行き、中国に戻ってこようと計画を立てた。ミャンマー領事館がある近くの街は昆明しかなかったのである。

We wrote before that sleeper buses in China are not a bad way to get around, and a pretty good value for your money. That’s true, but it depends, apparently, on which bus you get. Take our bus to Ruili from Kunming (as an example; don’t actually take this bus). While like all other Chinese buses safety was first, it is hard to describe in words how dirty this bus was, so here are some pics to give you an idea:

以前の日記で、中国の寝台バスはそんなに悪くない移動方法で値段もお手頃だと書いた。それは事実なのだが、やはりバスにも当たりハズレがあるらしい。例えば、昆明→瑞麗のバスは完全にハズレだった。中国で乗った他のバスと同じように、このバスも安全第一（？）だったが、このバスの汚さは言葉に表しようがない。とにかくこの写真を見ていただければわかるだろう。

Too bad smell-simulation technology is not widely available yet or we could also share with you the smell But when all was said and done we did get to Ruili without incident.

匂いシミュレーション技術があれば車内の悪臭までお届けできのだが（笑）。とにかくいろいろ大変だったが、まあ何事もなく瑞麗に到着した。

Ruili is a fair-sized town near the border with Myanmar, and it has a long-distance bus station that links it to many places, including Kunming. Actually, Ruili is not on the border with Myanmar; there is a very small place about 7 km from Ruili called Jiegao that is actually on the border with the Myanmar town of Muse. But it is easy to get to Jiegao: there is a small stand for taxis and minivans right across the street from the long-distance bus station. We got a taxi here for the short ride to the border.

瑞麗はミャンマーとの国境に近い、まあまあ大きな街で、ここから昆明などの中国各都市への長距離バスが発着している。実際のところ、ミャンマーとの国境は瑞麗にあるわけではなく、瑞麗から約7キロ離れた姐告という小さな町にある。なので、ミャンマー側の国境の町、ムセの隣にある中国側の街は姉告ということになる。ただ、瑞麗の長距離バスターミナルの真向かいに姐告までのタクシーやミニバンの乗り場があり、アクセスは良い。私たちは、長距離バスを降りたあと、この乗り場でタクシーをつかまえて姐告の国境地点まで向かった。

We were back from Myanmar and in China again. But we didn’t even have the time to reflect on how good our trip to Myanmar was before we were buying our sleeper bus tickets back to Kunming for that night. Why the rush? Because we had already booked night train tickets with a Chengdu travel agency for a departure from Chengdu to Lhasa on 04 March. The plan was to arrive in Chengdu the day before to collect the tickets. Actually, we were thinking to stop off at tourist hot spots Dali or Leikou first (or even bypass Kunming altogether), but our schedule made it such that we decided to take the first bus to Kunming.

ミャンマーから国境を越えて、また中国に戻ってきた。「ミャンマー楽しかったなあ」と感慨にふける暇もなく、すぐその日の夜に出発する昆明行き寝台バスのチケットを買った。なぜこんなに急いでいるかというと、3月4日（4日後）には成都からラサ行きの電車に乗らなければならないからだ。できれば出発前日の3月3日までに成都に着いて、あらかじめ予約しているチケットを受け取らなければいけないのである。本当は、見どころの多い大理とか麗江に立ち寄りながら成都に行ければと思っていたが、この日程では時間的に無理なので、仕方なく交通の要所である昆明に戻ることになった。

Looking at our schedule, we really had no choice but to return to Kunming from Ruili in order to catch a 04 March night train from Chengdu to Lhasa as we had previously booked with a travel agent in Chengdu. We arrived in Kunming on 01 March and we thinking about hitting Dali or some other place before catching the train the next day to Chengdu, but after arriving in Kunming we were just absolutely pooped and opted instead to stay another night at the Camilla Hotel in Kunming.

成都の旅行会社に、3月4日発成都→ラサの夜行電車のチケットをあらかじめ予約しておいたので、スケジュール的に瑞麗か ら昆明に戻らざるを得なくなった。3月1日、昆明に到着し、翌日出発する成都行きの電車に乗る前に、大理かどこかに行こうかとも考えてみたが、疲労困憊状 態の私たちは、前回も泊まった昆明のカメリアユースに1泊することにした。

Spent a couple of days in Chengdu. Would love to tell you about the city, but unfortunately we experienced very little aside from the hostel, Sim’s Cozy Guest House (which was great), and the Chengdu railway station. The reason: Chengdu International Travel and Special Tours(成都国際旅游公司特殊旅游部). Avoid these guys. As we mentioned earlier, we had booked far in advance with this company train tickets from Chengdu to Lhasa for 04 March (and so had already made arrangements for a Tibet permit from a Nepal company in line with that date). We had even received a confirmation email from this company when we were in Myanmar to the effect that the tickets were a done deal and had only to contact the representative, Mr Teikou, upon our arrival to pick up the tickets. So imagine our surprise when we telephoned Mr Teikou only to learn that not only did he not have the tickets, but that it “may be difficult” to get them. He even asked if we had our Tibet permit-the same permit we had sent to him over 10 days earlier and confirmed receipt by email! We expressed astonishment-to which he wondered “why don’t you take a plane”, even though we had told him repeatedly that we would not take a plane.

成都は数日間滞在したので、街の様子などをお伝えしたいところだが、残念ながら我々の宿であるシムズコージーゲストハウス（かなりお勧め）と成都駅の往復しかしていないので、あまりお伝えできない。街を見学できなかった理由は私たちがラサ行き電車の予約をしていた旅行会社、「成都国際旅游公司特殊旅游部」である。前の日記で書いたとおり、3月4日発成都→ラサの電車のチケットをずいぶん前からこの会社に予約していた（その日程に合わせて、ネパールの旅行会社にチベット入境証も発行してもらっていた）。ミャンマーにいる間に、この会社からチケットの予約を承ったという確認のメールまで受け取ったので、チケットはもう入手できており、あとは成都に付いたらこの会社の担当者である「程浩（テイコウ）」さんに連絡してチケットを受け取るだけだと思っていた。で、出発前日の3月3日に程浩さんに電話すると、チケットはまだ入手していないどころか、「入手は難しいかもしれない」というのである。しかも、チベット入境証は程浩さんに10日も前に送付済みだったし、程浩さんから受領の確認メールも貰っていたのに、その入境証を私たちが持っているかと訳の分からない質問をしてきたりするのだ。私達が驚いて今さらそんなこと言われても困るというと、「では飛行機はいかがですか」なんて言うのである。私たちは飛行機を使わないと何度も伝えてあったのに・・・。
