After a grueling haul across the desert we finally made it to Cairo, and a short taxi ride later we arrived near the hotel we had booked, the Berlin Hotel. We booked this hotel knowing little about it, and we greeted by a dark and unmanned reception desk on the fourth floor of a historic (read old) building. We were somewhat put off by this, but were soon warmly greeted by the guy on the night shift. He then showed us the huge room noting that breakfast and Wi-Fi were included in the rate, and we were glad we had stayed. Soon after checking in, the same man said that there was a call for us, which we found strange since we knew no one in Egypt save him. Turns out the call was from the manager of the hotel, welcoming us to Cairo and putting us on guard against the myriad of scams and con artists in Cairo who are looking to turn a quick buck off the tourist trade. He also let us know about the tours to the Pyramids he was offering, but without being pushy about it in the slightest way. He was also careful to note that the taxi driver he employs for this is not permitted to take tourists to any souvenir shops or “carpet schools” or the like along the way. This guy really knows what he’s doing and what tourists, especially backpackers, are looking for.

長くて辛いバス移動の後、やっとカイロに到着。バスターミナルからは予約した「ベルリンホテル」の近くまでタクシーで移動した。どんなホテルか事前の知識もないままに着いたが、年代ものの建物の4階の受付は薄暗く、誰もいない。しばらく待つと、夜間シフトの係の男性に温かく迎えられた。見せてもらった部屋は広々としていて、聞けば朝食とワイヤレスインターネット接続も宿泊料金に含まれているという。ここに泊ることにして本当に正解だった。チェックインのあと、先ほどの男性スタッフが私たちに電話だと言ってきた。はて、エジプトに知り合いなどいないのに、いったいだれから、と不思議に思って電話にでると、ホテルのマネージャーからだった。マネージャーはカイロに来た私たちを歓迎すると、カイロ市内に多い、観光客をカモとするプロ詐欺師の手口を説明し、ぜひ気をつけるようにと注意してくれた。そのほかに、このホテルでピラミッドツアーも手配できると言ってきたが、無理に勧める様子はこれっぽっちもなし。もちろん、このホテルで雇っているツアー用タクシーの運転手は、ツアー中に土産屋や「カーペットスクール」などには決して連れて行ったりしないという。このホテルのマネージャーは、旅行者、特にバックパッカーの要望をしっかり心得ているみたい。 (続きを読む…)

From Cairo’s Giza station we boarded the Wagon Lits sleeper train for Aswan, about 600 Km up the Nile. This is quite a nice sleeper train: you get a two-person cabin complete with a hot-water ready wash basin and dinner and breakfast served to you by the cabin boy. The price? USD 60 per person. Little wonder then that almost all of the passengers are foreigners.

Luxor flourished as the magnificent capital of ancient Egypt for about 500 years, and as such sports most of the “must sees” in Egypt after the Pyramids at Giza. Unfortunately, the modern town of Luxor is really nothing more than an unremarkable town whose sole purpose is to empty the pockets of tourists. Indeed, the irascible touts here rival those in India. And, come to think of it, the filthiness and stink of the place are also on par with many a place in India as well. For all these reasons we planned to stay only two days. As luck would have it though the sleeper train was fully booked until the 15th (this despite the assurances of the representative in Cairo that tickets can be easily bought for return travel in Luxor), forcing us to fend off touts here in Luxor for 4 days and 3 nights.

ルクソールは、古代エジプト時代に約500年間壮麗な都として栄えた街。そのため、ギザのピラミッドに次いで見逃せないスポットがてんこ盛り。しかし、現代のルクソールは、残念ながら観光客にお金を落とさせようとするだけの特徴のない街になり下がっている。そして、ルクソールの客引きたちは、インドの同業者にも引けを取らない程しつこくて強引。そう言えば、ゴミだらけの混沌とした街の様子も、どことなくインドを思い起こさせる。こんな状態なので、ルクソールでの滞在は2日だけにしたかったけれど、残念ながら夜行列車のチケットが11月15日の分しかなかったので、ルクソールで3泊4日も客引きとの戦いを強いられることになってしまった。 (続きを読む…)

Be boarded the Wagonlits once again at Luxor and made way for Cairo. We arrived at Cairo’s Giza Station at a rude 5:30 am, and half-asleep made our way to Ramses Station by subway to board an Alexandria-bound commuter train. Just before boarding the Alexandria-bound train, however, it hit us: the Wagonlits goes all the way to Alexandria from Luxor! Why the hell didn’t anyone tell us that? We could have been still fast asleep in our warm beds ready to take breakfast at a decent hour. Win some, lose some I guess.

ルクソールから、また快適な夜行列車ワゴン・リーに乗ってカイロへ。早朝5時半にカイロのギザ駅で降り、眠い目をこすりつつ地下鉄でラムセス駅まで移動し、そこでアレキサンドリア行きのチケットを買い、電車に乗り込んだ。でも、この電車に乗るまえに知ってしまった。さっきまで乗っていたワゴン・リーが、ルクソールから直接アレキサンドリアまで行くことを・・・！わざわざカイロで乗換えなくてもよかったんだー！ああ、もうちょっとあのフカフカベットで寝たかったなあぁ。 (続きを読む…)
