Jerusalem is what used to be the capital of the ancient United Monarchy of Israel and Judea, and as the location of what was Solomon’s Temple, the holiest of places for Jews. But then as it is also the location of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which is said to be the place where Jesus is said to have been crucified, and of the Dome of the Rock, where Mohammed is said to have ascended, it is also a most holy place for both Christians and Muslims. Interestingly, it is also claimed by the Israeli government to be the capital of Israel, despite the fact that the majority of foreign countries maintain their embassies in Tel Aviv. And, of course, the Palestinians also claim this place as their own. It’s a heavy place to visit.

エルサレムは、古代イスラエル・ユダ王国の首都であり、エルサレム神殿があった場所で、ユダヤ教徒の聖地。それだけでなく、キリストが処刑された場所が残る聖墳墓教会や、ムハンマドが昇天を体験した場所と言われる岩のドームもあり、キリスト教徒、イスラム教徒にとっても重要な聖地。エルサレムはイスラエル政府が首都として主張している街だけど、国際社会からは首都とは認められておらず、多くの国の大使館はテルアビブにある。また、パレスチナもエルサレムの領有を主張している。これだけでも、エルサレムが宗教的にも政治的にも文化的にも、非常に濃い街だということが分かる。 (続きを読む…)

Bethlehem lies a mere 10 or so Km from Jerusalem. But then Bethlehem is also in the West Bank, and as it is not a simple matter to get in and out of the West Bank, it feels quite a way off. This plus the West Bank barrier built by the Israelis just adds to the feeling of awayness and isolation. Indeed, we were asked upon entry to Israel whether we would be entering the West Bank, and, amusingly, whether we knew about the West Bank. We answered “no”, and “who doesn’t”. Funnily enough, at the time we weren’t thinking of coming here in any event.

エルサレムから南に10キロほどいくと、ベツレヘムはある。ここはパレスチナ自治区内の町なので、エルサレムから近いとはいっても、なんだか入りにくい遠い町のような印象をもっていた。97年にイスラエル側が町を囲む分離壁を作ったことが大きなニュースとして報道されていたから、そんな印象があったのかもしれない。なので、イスラエルに入国した時も、入管の職員にパレスチナ自治区に行く予定はありますか、と聞かれて「そのつもりはないです」と答えていたし、実際、行くつもりもなかった。 (続きを読む…)

We took the short bus ride to Tel Aviv and decided to stay here a couple of days. Though only an hour away from Jerusalem, Tel Aviv feels like it is a world away. It is a modern, European-like seaside city. And it has some great beaches. Even though it was the offseason, there were still quite a few sun worshipers and swimmers, not to mention the throngs of surfers.

エルサレムからバスに揺られテルアビブへ。ここで数日間滞在することにした。エルサレムからたったの1時間しか離れていないのに、テルアビブは全く違う世界のように感じる。近代的で、ヨーロッパのような海辺の街。しかも、ビーチが素晴らしい！オフシーズンとはいえ、太陽の光と海を目指してビーチに繰り出す人たちはまだ多い。もちろんサーファーもウジャウジャいる。 (続きを読む…)
