The archeological site of Palmyra is the remains of a Roman-era town. It is probably most famous for its long, colonnaded main street. It is a must-see in Syria. But before touring about the ruins, we had first to find a hotel in the modern town of Palmyra next to the site.

We made into Aleppo by bus in the early afternoon, which meant in total about 16 or so hours on the friggin’ bus.

カッパドキアからバスを乗り継ぎ、やっと翌日の午後早い時間にシリア最初の目的地、アレッポに到着。つまり、カッパドキアから実に16時間もバスに乗っていたことになる。

No matter, though, because we were soon cheered up by the Syrian people. They are incredibly nice, and, on top of having bright and pleasant dispositions, go out of their way to help foreigners. It reminded us of the hospitality we were shown in Iran, and, even more so, in Pakistan. Indeed, at the place where we were dropped we asked a policeman where the landmark clock tower is (which is also where all the cheapie hotels are), but instead of just waving us in the general right direction (as he might have in Turkey; or asking for a bribe, as he might have in Kazakhstan) this guy escorted us all the way to the tower!

疲れ果ててたどり着いたものの、シリアの人々のお陰で元気がでた。出会ったシリア人は本当に優しくて、底抜けに明るくてひょうきんで、その上、困っている外国人がいれば一生懸命助けてくれる。そういえば、イランとパキスタンでも同じように暖かい歓待を受けたが、特にパキスタンがそうだった。アレッポでバスを降りたとき、町のランドマークとなっている（また安宿街に近い）時計塔の場所を警察官に聞いた。これまでの経験から、「あっちの方」とただ大まかな方角を指差すだろうと思っていたら（トルコで警察官に道を聞けばそうだったし、カザフスタンで同じことをすればワイロを要求されたかも）、わざわざその時計台までエスコートしてくれた。やさしい！ (続きを読む…)

Our next stop in Northern Syria was the city of Hama, about 2 hours from Aleppo. Hama’s claim to fame is its old waterwheels. Now, hearing that you might think, like I did, “big deal”, but actually they are a sight to see. Almost all the water from the river that was used to feed the aqueduct via the waterwheels is gone, but the wheels themselves are still in apparent working order, and can be moved with some effort. The noise these gigantic things make when moved is worth the trip alone-creepy and exciting at the same time.

シリア北部の次の目的地は、アレッポからバスで約2時間の街ハマ。ハマは昔から使われている水車で有名らしい。そう聞くと「ふーん、水車？それが？」と思うかもしれないけれど、実際水車はなかなか面白かった。水車から水道橋へと運ばれていた川の水はほとんど無い状態だけれど、複数ある水車そのものはまだ機能しているようで、何人かでかかればまだ動く。巨大な水車が動いたときのギーコキーコという、なんとも気味の悪い、でもワクワクするような音を聞くだけでも、ハマまで来る価値はあると思う。 (続きを読む…)

We boarded a very unreliable-looking bus at Palmyra for the 2 and 1/2 hours journey to the Damascus “garage” (bus station). We arrived safe and sound, despite the distinct smell of gas throughout the bus for the whole trip. By chance, on the bus with us were two English guys who had also been with us on our Antakya-Aleppo journey-it’s really true that travelers follow almost the same route wherever they go. Of course once we left the bus we were being “taxi, taxi?”ed by an older tout. We firmly but politely told him that no, we don’t want a taxi; we want a “service” (a kind of public mini-bus). In response, even more touts approached wondering whether we didn’t need a “taxi?” Finally, after rejecting “taxi?” and “where are you going?” calls for the umpteenth time, one guy gave in and directed us to the correct service (destinations on all services are of course written in Arabic). He even instructed the driver as to our destination. Here even the touts offer hospitality. If this were India we would surely be told either “there are no services anymore”, or “taxis are cheaper”, or some such other nonsense. But with that we made it the centre in no time, and for a mere 10 Syrian Pounds (about 20 cents)!

パルミラから頼りなげなボロい大型バスに乗り、2時間半くらいでダマスカスのガラージ（バスターミナル）に到着。このバスには、トルコのアンタキアからシリアのアレッポまで同じバスで国境を越えたイギリス人男性2人も乗ってきた。観光客の辿る道はほとんど同じだね、とご挨拶。がラージでバスを降りるや否や、タクシーの客引きオジサンが笑顔で声をかけてきた。タクシーじゃなくて、セルビス（大型ワゴンのミニバス）がいいのよね～とオジサンとやりとりしていると、別のオジサン達もワラワラと寄ってきては俺のタクシーに乗れと誘う。セルビスがいいの！と何度も言ったら、オジサンの１人が「わかったわかった、こっちに来い」といってセルビスまで案内してくれた。しかも運転手に行き先まで告げてくれた。これがインドだったら、「セルビスはなくなったよ」とか「タクシーの方が安いよ」などとウソを言って騙しにかかりそうだけど、シリアの人は客引きでもやさしい。お陰で１人たったの10シリアポンド（約20円！）で町の中心まで行けた。 (続きを読む…)

Quneitra is a ghost town just inside the disputed Golan Heights, and is under the control of Syria, with UN observers. The town, or, more accurately, what remains of the erstwhile town, is in the same state it was on the day that the Israeli army pulled out after the Yom Kippur War.

We took a “Pullman” (long-distance) bus from Damascus to a town, Dara, just short of the border with Jordan. We met an older Syrian man (a teacher) on the bus who was kind enough to take us by “service” (public mini-bus) to the centre of town; more, despite our objection, he even paid our fare for the service! Hospitality for the Syrians really has a much deeper meaning than it does for us, well, for me anyway. Embarrassingly so.
