An island of Lesbians, yes it is true: we made our first stop in Greece the island of Lesvos . Unfortunately, we didn’t get to know much of the island beyond the main town, Mitilini, as we left the next day on a ferry for the nearby island of Hios, often linked with the mythical Hios, son of Poseidon. Even worse, we only realized after checking into our rather drab hotel that we had missed the opportunity to stay at the “Hotel Lesbian”. Oh, well, you win some and you lose some, I guess.

私たちがギリシャで最初に訪れたのが、そう、本当のレズビアンの島、レスヴォス島。「レスヴォス島の人」は本当にLesbians（レズビアン）と呼ばれているのです！この島出身の有名な女性詩人が同姓愛者だったから、レズビアン＝女性の同性愛者となったとか。残念ながら、レスボヴォス島には一泊しただけだったので、見て周ったのは島一番の港町、ミティリニだけ。ここはのんびりした、リゾート地って雰囲気。去る日になって気づいたが、この島にはなんと「レズビアン」という名のホテルがあった！うーん、泊ってみたかった・・・。で、次の日には隣にあるヒオス島へ。ヒオスという地名は、海の神様ポセイドンの息子、ヒオスから来ているらしい。 (続きを読む…)

After a grueling journey on the floor of the ferry from Hios, we finally made to Athens. We found a relatively cheap hotel (79 Euros being very relative), and settled in for a few days. Our objectives were simple enough: the Parthenon, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, and a day trip to Delphi.

床で雑魚寝して一夜を過ごすという、ヒオス島からの辛い船旅を終え、やっとアテネに到着。比較的安いホテル（といっても79ユーロ。それでもアテネの中ではマシな方）を見つけ、そこに数日間腰を落ち着けることに。アテネでの目的はとっても簡単。パルテノン神殿を見て、ゼウス神殿を見て、そしてデルフィへ1日旅行に行くこと。 (続きを読む…)

After Athens we started out for the Peloponnese, where many of ancient Greece’s greatest ruins are located. First stop though was Nafplion, 3 hours from Athens by bus.

Sparta. On hearing those words you automatically think of the Sparta we all learn about, the strict, demanding, and disciplined Sparta. Thing is, the modern day Sparta couldn’t be any different if it tried: a very relaxed, no, even lazy atmosphere prevails in modern Sparta-a truly European Sparta this is. And, though of much fame there are hardly any tourists to speak of.

Our next stop on the Peloponnese pilgrimage was Ancient Olympia. One thing I will say off the top is I sure hope that they had better transportation links back in the days of the ancient Olympic Games, ‘cuz it sure blows chunks now. We wanted to get there from Sparta, and were sure it would be a simple train or bus ride. Wrong. First, the train system on the Peloponnese is at best erratic and at worst non-existent in certain places. Second, there is no direct bus route to Olympia from Sparta. In fact, we had to change buses three times on top of a short train trip. It was an Olympian effort.

ペロポネソス半島、遺跡巡りの旅で次に訪れたのが、かの有名な古代オリンピア。まず言いたいのが、こんなに有名なオリンピアなのに、とにかく交通の便が非常に悪い！下手すれば古代オリンピック時代より不便なんじゃないかと思うくらい。私たちはスパルタからオリンピアを目指したんだけれど、有名なスパルタから、これまた有名なオリンピアまでだから、電車やバス一本で直接行けるだろうと思っていたら、とんだ間違いだった。ペロポネソス半島内の鉄道網はとっても不規則で、最悪の場合、電車も通っていないところもある。で、スパルタからオリンピアまでは直行バスのルートもない。結局、そんなに遠くもないのに、スパルタからオリンピアまで、1日がかりでバスや電車を3度も乗り換えることになった。オリンピックに行くからには、オリンピック選手並みの苦労が必要だってことか・・・？ (続きを読む…)

We left Corinth by train and arrived in Athens in the late afternoon. We were to board a sleeper train to Thessaloniki in Athens, but that wasn’t until late at night, meaning that we had some time to kill. So we decided to make the most of it, and made our back to a little hole-in-the-wall tavern/restaurant by the hotel we had stayed at. This place serves up great Greek Salads and pastas, and does so at a reasonable price. Then, with some incredibly lucky timing, we were also able to catch the changing of the guard (as per previous post) before we made our way to the station. Our destination was Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city, where we would stay for a night before catching the international sleeper train to Istanbul. This train featured four-berth rooms, but it was quite a bit older and more run down than we had imagined. This, plus the fact that the actual time to Thessaloniki was only 5~6 hours meant less than a great sleep.

コリントス駅から電車に乗り、夕方にはアテネの駅に到着。ここから深夜発の夜行列車に乗る予定だけれど、まだ時間はかなりある。なので、前回泊まったホテルの近くにある小さなタベルナまで足を運び、ギリシア最後の夕食。おいしいグリークサラダとパスタを堪能した。前回のポストでアップした衛兵交代式を見た後、駅に戻り、夜行列車に乗り込んだ。この夜行で向かったのが、ギリシアで2番目に大きな都市テッサロニキ。２段ベッドが２つある４人部屋の列車は、思ったより古く、ちょっと期待外れだった。乗車時間も５～６時間くらいしかなかったので、あまり眠れなかった。 (続きを読む…)
