A few hours after leaving Taraz we arrived at the Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan border. Very few formalities here: without even having our bags checked we were waved on to Kyrgyzstan.

With all our visa preparations done in Bishkek there was nothing to do but wait, and what better way to do that than not in Bishkek. This in mind we headed off to Kyrgyzstan’s giant lake in the east, Issyk-Köl. “Köl” means lake, we think.

Osh is Kyrgyzstan’s second largest city, and it is also only a stone’s throw from the Uzbekistan border. And since thanks to the ridiculous, Soviet-hangover system of using dates indicated by the applicant for the visa validity term (ridiculous because when you apply it is often very difficult if not impossible to know when you will actually enter the country) we could only enter Uzbekistan from July 12, we decided to stay in Osh for a few days. Luckily, we were joined by a very amiable French couple, Antoine and Elen (sorry, can’t be sure about the spelling) with whom we shared a taxi from Bishkek, and so our stay was quite enjoyable.
キルギスタンで2番目に大きな都市オシュは、ウズベキスタン国境に近い。しかしウズベキスタンには7月12日まで入国できない。それもこれも、中央アジアでは、ビザ申請の際に入国日と出国日を記入させられ、それがビザの有効期間として明記されるというソ連時代の制度が残っていて、私達のウズベキスタンビザにも「7月12日から有効」と書かれているから。でも、日程が常に未定の自由旅行の場合、ビザ申請時に入国日を決めるのは至難の業。この制度はバックパッカーにとっては不便極まりない。ということで、ウズベキスタンに入国できるまで、数日間オシュで過ごすことに。でも、ビシュケクからオシュまでタクシーをシェアした楽しいフランス人カップル、アントニオとエレーヌのおかげで、オシュでの滞在はとても楽しいものになりました。 (続きを読む…)
