The first thing you think of when leave the Almaty 2 train station and head down the main street is how much the city looks like a European city. The streets are all tree-lined, you are tripping over out-door cafes and bars, most of the people are dressed to the nines, and there is an overall air of affluence to the place. Speaking of affluence, we have none of it, but were lucky enough to be offered a ride to the place where we were going to stay by a Chinese man of Kazak origin whom we met on our train from Urumqi. The place we were planning to stay was a dormitory, the “Third Dormitory”, in a university. Why a dorm? Because Almaty is expensive, ridiculously expensive, that’s why. There’s no McDonald’s in Kazakhstan, so we can’t do a Big Mac index, but we can say that an Americano with milk will run you over 4 dollars.

アルマトイⅡ駅を出て大通りに出ると、なんだかヨーロッパの街に来たような錯覚に。並木道には屋外カフェやバーが並んでいて、華やかな服装の人たちが歩き、街全体が裕福な雰囲気につつまれている。裕福さとは無縁の私達だったけど、ウルムチ発の国際電車で同じコンパートメントになったカザフ系中国人が、彼を迎えにきた友達の車で宿まで連れて行ってくれたのはとってもラッキーだった。最初は「Third Dormitory（第3寮）」という、大学の寮に泊まる予定だった。なぜ寮かというと、アルマトイはとにかく信じられないくらい物価が高いから。カザフスタンにはマクドナルドがないので、「ビックマック指標」では物価の高さをお伝えできないが、たとえば、アメリカンコーヒーにミルク付けるとなんと一杯4ドル以上！日本と変わりません。 (続きを読む…)

This place is bizarre. After naming Astana the new capital of Kazakhstan seemingly out of nowhere, Kazakhstan’s president has embarked on turning what was a provincial town into something like those plastic-looking this-is-the-future looking cities from the 60’s Star Trek series. While the city north of the Ishin River is sane enough, the south is a display of megalomania that needs to be seen to be believed. Though devoid of people besides construction workers, the place is littered with all manner of weird buildings whose architecture defy description, as well as many arty-looking monuments whose purpose is at best unclear. It really makes you feel uncomfortable, and that’s not just from the desert sun bearing down on the tree-less sidewalk.

奇妙な街、アスタナ。カザフスタンの大統領は、アスタナをカザフスタンの新しい首都にすると宣言してから、この地方都市を60年代のスタートレックシリーズに出てくる、プラスチックで出来た未来都市のような街に変身させてきた。街中を流れるイシン川の北側は生活の香りがする普通の街だけど、南側は信じられないような誇大妄想が現実となったようなところ。工事現場の労働者以外に人はほとんど見当たらないのに、不思議なデザインの建築物がたちならび、言わんとすることがよく分からない芸術的なモニュメントもたくさんある。暑い中、木陰のない歩道を歩かなければならないのもあるけど、この空間は何となく居心地が悪い。 (続きを読む…)

Karaganda is famous for coal and the Soviet-era gulag in the area for mining same. Not much to report about the city, except to say that thanks to Kal, whom we had met up with again by chance on the train from Astana, we were able to have supper at the home of a local, Oleg Boyorchuk. Oleg is a computer science student, and he and his mom were gracious enough to let us have a supper with them. Oleg’s mom went way out of her way and prepared a chicken dinner with all the fixin’s. We haven’t had home-made food in about 5 months and so enjoyed it immensely. Sooo good. We didn’t want to leave.

カラガンダは石炭、そしてソ連時代に鉱山の強制労働収容所管理本部だったことで有名。町については特に書いておくこともないけど、アスタナからカラガンダに向かう電車でまたまた偶然に出会ったカルさんのお陰で、地元の青年、オレグ・ボヨルチャック君のお家にお邪魔する機会に恵まれた。オレグ君はコンピューターサイエンスを専攻する学生で、彼もお母さんも、私達を喜んで食事に招待してくれた。オレグ君のお母さんは鶏の丸焼きを準備してくれていて、もう5ヶ月間ほど家庭料理を食べていなかった私達は、感激の涙がながれそうに。オレグ君、お母さん、どうもありがとう！！ (続きを読む…)

Zhezkazgan is an industrial city on the end of the trunk line west of Karaganda. We chose it only because from here we believed that we could catch a bus going south west to Kyzylorda, where we could again take the train further south.

We arrived in Turkistan by train and had the rather distasteful experience on that train. Our first crooked cop. Police ride the rails and foreigners are often asked for their passports to confirm identities and to check as to onward destinations. On this one though we met one of the dirty ones. First, we should explain that it seems that the carrying or consumption of vodka onboard a train is illegal. This was as much as we understood from the others in our compartment after the incident. About 20 minutes into the journey our compartment mates (Kazakhstani) were offering us vodka and beer, and then, suddenly, a cop came into our compartment brandishing some document. Seems that this document was a copy of the relevant law or regulation (if there really is one) that (he seemed to claim) prohibits vodka on trains. After some initial questioning the cop left the compartment, but only to summon us one-by-one (though Dan stayed with Esshie for hers) to the police compartment where we were again interrogated. It seemed that the cop, who appeared to be intoxicated himself, was under the impression that at least Esshie had drunk vodka, which Esshie vigorously denied. This “cop” wasn’t going to give up and was clearly looking for us to pay a “fine” for the believed “infraction”, threatening even to throw us off the train. He even went so far as to have Esshe blow into a piece of curled up piece of paper that the cop used as a make-shift breathalyzer (one which only he could read). At this point we had enough and brandished the card of the Japanese counsel in Almaty and told the cop to phone him if he thought there was some trouble. He finally relented at this and let us go. What an asshole.

トルキスタンには列車で到着したが、その列車の中で不快な経験が待っていた。はじめて「悪徳警官」に会ってしまったのだ。警察官が列車に常駐し、外国人乗客がいれば身分証明書の提示を求め、次の目的地を確認することはよくあることだけれど、この列車で会った警察官はいわゆる「汚い」警官だった。この「事件」の後、同じコンパートメントのカザフスタン人から教えてもらって分かったことだけど、カザフスタンでは列車内へのウォッカの持ち込み、または飲むことが法律で禁じられているらしい。で、何が起きたかと言うと・・・、私達が乗車して約20分後、同室のカザフスタン人達からウォッカとビールを勧められていたら、そこに突然、この警官がコンパートメントのドアを開けて入ってきた。そして、何か書いてある文書を得意げに突き出した。その文書には、列車内でのウォッカ禁止令かなにかが書かれているらしい（そんな法律か規則が本当にあるのかどうかは定かではないが）。コンパートメントに入ってきたこの警官は、パスポートをチェックした後、ウォッカを飲んだだろとしばらく尋問してきたけれど、否定すると一旦引き揚げていった。でもそれで終わりではなく、今度は1人ずつ自分の部屋に呼びつけてまた尋問を始めた（私の時はダンが付き添ってくれました）。この警官、自分自身が酩酊状態のくせして、「飲んだだろ？飲んだって認めろよ」となぜか私だけを集中的に尋問してくる。私は「飲んでない。飲んでないったら飲んでない！」と断固否定。だってそれが事実だから。それでもこの警官は諦める気配もなく、なんなら電車から降りてもらおうか、と脅す始末。やってもいない「違反行為」の「罰金」を私達から徴収しようともくろんでいるのがミエミエ。しかも、A4の紙をラッパのような形に巻き、その中に息を吹き込めという。言われたとおりにすると、その中を嗅いでは、何の科学的根拠もないのに「ほら、飲んでるじゃないか」と言ってくる。もうこれで頭に来た私は、アルマトイの日本領事館のスタッフにもらっていた名刺を出し、何か問題があるならここに電話しろ！と主張。この警官、このあとも少し粘ったけれど、最終的には諦めて、コンパートメントに戻ることができた。こんなケツの穴（失礼！）みたいな奴が警察官なんて、むかつく！ (続きを読む…)
