We arrived in Gorakhpur from the Indian border after about 5 hours. And upon alighting the bus we were greeted by steamy weather, a cornucopia of strange and unpleasant smells, blaring horns, and stares.

We arrived late in Lucknow from Gorakhpur, about 22:30. While arriving late is never a good thing, compounding this we were still without a guidebook or even a map. All we had were the addresses of some hotels we found on the Internet while staying in Gorakhpur. There was one hotel that was supposed to be “right across from the station”, but lo and behold we could not find that hotel in the absolute chaos that is the area around Lucknow station (more, for whatever reason, there are two train stations in Lucknow and they are right beside each other).

ゴラクプールを出てラックナウに到着したのは午後10時半頃。深夜の到着は何かと不便だ。しかも我々はガイドブックも地図も持っておらず、ゴラクプールのネットカフェで調べたホテルの住所リストがあるだけで地理は全く分からない。駅のすぐ近くに目指すホテルが1軒あるはずなのだが、ラックナウ駅周辺は渾沌としており（なぜかラックナウには2つの駅が真横に並んでおり、それがさらにわかりにくくしていた）、結局駅近のホテルを見つけることは出来なかった。 (続きを読む…)

Varanasi is a holy place for Hindu people, with the “Great Mother”, the Ganges, running through it. Here Hindu people come to cleanse themselves from sin and, also, to cremate their dead. Thus we were somewhat naively expecting a calm place centered about a magnificent river. Wrong on both counts, dead wrong.

バラナシは、「母なる川」であるガンジス川が流れる、ヒンズー教徒にとっては聖なる場所だ。ヒンズー教の人々は、自分の罪を洗い流し、亡くなった人を火葬するためにここを訪れる。なので、我々は愚直にも、壮大な川を中心に広がる穏やかな町を想像していたが、それは間違いだった。 (続きを読む…)

Our first big city in India, Kolkata (Calcutta). Indeed, the fact that Kolkata is India’s second-largest city became immediately clear to us upon our morning arrival at the huge main Kolkata station, Howrah station.

Puri is a town on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. It has a beach, and so we went there hoping to escape the stress and chaos of India’s cities. It was good. I mean, it is not a postcard beach by any means with palm trees, clean, sparking sand, or crystal clear water; the shore is a little rough, the tide strong, there is little or no shade anywhere, and the water leaves something to be desired, but all in all it’s not bad. More, the small town that fronts the beach is quite cozy.

プーリはベンガル湾に面した街。ビーチもあるので、インドの都市のストレスや雑踏から逃れようとやってきた。ビーチはまあまあ良かった。ただ、ポストカードの写真のように、椰子の木に白い砂浜、透き通った海…とはいかなかったが。砂はすこし粗く、波は高く、影はほとんどなく、水もきれいとは言えなかった。でも全体的には悪くなかった。それに、ビーチ沿いの小さな町はなかなか居心地が良かった。 (続きを読む…)

Visakhapatnam, it’s a mouthful for sure, but mercifully everyone refers to it simply as “Vizag”. Vizag itself has a beach, but it’s not really for swimming-the “boardwalk” is what’s popular here, and with good reason as it is quite lively. There are cheap places to stay near the centre of town, but Vizag (1.5 million) is no Puri and we felt it worth the few extra Rupees to get a place by the beach (550 Rs).

ビザクハプトナム。舌を噛みそうな名前だが、幸いにも、みんな「バイザック」という短い名前で呼んでいる。バイザッグにはビーチがあるが、海水浴を楽しむようなビーチではない。ここでは海岸沿いの長い遊歩道が賑やかで人気がある。街の中心部あたりにも安宿があったが、バイザッグはプーリと違って人口150万人の大きな街。せっかくビーチがあるので、すこし高め（550ルピー）だが、ビーチの近くのホテルに泊まることにした。 (続きを読む…)

Hyderabad, or, as it is better known in India in the right circles owing to its booming IT industry, “Cyberabad” brought to our minds images of a cutting edge, ultra-modern city. This is perhaps why we thought that the bus driver had made a mistake when he dropped us, because we were greeted by all the usual chaos that defines most of India’s “real” cities, including the mandatory “Hello! Auto rickshaw?” from the taxi drivers who converged upon our backpack-laden selves immediately upon alighting from the bus.

ハイデラバードはIT業界が盛んな都市で、別名「サイデラバード」とも呼ばれているとか。なんとなく洗練された都市をイメージしていたが、長距離バスを降りたハイドラバード駅（別名ナンパリー駅）前は、やはりインドならではの混沌とした雰囲気。大きなバックパックを抱えた私達を見て、さっそくオートの運転手から声がかかる。これも他のインドの地域と同じ。うーん残念。 (続きを読む…)

Whilst in India you may feel the urge to escape India-if so, Goa is the place to do it. Goa, last bastion of European colonialism on the subcontinent (by the Portuguese until 1961), is blessed with beautiful palm-lined beaches along the Arabian Sea, and is thus a major destination for European, especially English, travelers.

Delhi: hot, damn hot. I mean it was over 40 degrees plus every day. All that and we stayed 2 weeks-why: we needed to collect our onward visas, that’s why. Sightseeing (for what it was worth in that heat) was limited to Saturdays and Sundays. Weekdays were like work-every day we made the rather arduous trip to the diplomatic enclaves of Delhi and back.

デリーではとうとう気温が40度を超えた。そんな灼熱のデリーに2週間も滞在したのは、これから行く国のビザを取得するため。デリー滞在中、観光は大使館が休みの土日だけ。平日はまるで仕事のように毎日大使館の集まるエリアに通った。 (続きを読む…)
