After finally sorting out whom we should pay-i.e., the Tibet guide on the China side or the Nepal guide on the Nepal side-we were at Nepal immigration. At the border you can receive a visa for no charge (you will need a passport-size photo), but it is only good for 3 days. Unless you are sure that you are leaving within 3 days, it is probably a good idea to pay the 30 USD for the 30-visa at the border. This is because it is 30 USD no matter how long you stay provided your stay is less than 30 days, and while you can get a visa extension in Kathmandu for the same price, the immigration office is in an inconvenient location and the wait is at least 2 hours. Also, if you overstay your 3 days gratis visa, you will have to pay 30 USD PLUS 2 USD for every day over your 3-day visa.

ツアー料金を支払う相手が中国側のチベット人ガイドか、それともネパール側のネパール人ガイドかでもめたが、やっと話がついてネパールの入管へ。国境では無料でビザを発行してもらえる（パスポート用の照明写真が1枚必要）。でもこの無料ビザの有効期間はわずか3日間。ネパールの滞在期間は3日未満！とはっきり決まっていないなら、国境で30米ドル支払って30日間ビザを取得しておいた方がいい。この30日間ビザは、30ドル払えば30日以下なら何日間でも滞在できるビザで、カトマンドゥにある入管でも同じ値段で取得できる。でも、カトマンドゥの入管オフィスが不便な場所にあり、発行まで少なくとも2時間は待たされる。しかも、3日間ビザが切れたまま滞在を続けてしまうと、出国時、30ドルだけでなく、オーバーステイした日数ｘ2ドルもとられてしまうのだ。 (続きを読む…)

The driver asked us what hotel we wanted to go to, but we didn’t know so he kindly dropped us off in what he called the “tourist area”. This is Thamel in Kathmandu, and more than a tourist area it is actually a tourist ghetto. The streets are simply bursting with touts, tourists, budget hotels, tourist agents, and shops selling all manner of tourist junk. But that is the good thing about it, too-we found a relatively cheap room (8 USD) with a shower attached in no time.

ジープの運転手にホテルはどこかと聞かれ、まだ決めていないと言うと、「観光エリア」というところまで連れて行ってくれた。そのエリアとは、カトマンドゥのタメル地区のことだったのだが、「観光エリア」というよりは「観光客居住地」と呼んだ方がよさそうな場所。それくらいフラッとやってきて住みついてしまったような観光客が多い。通りは、観光客、客引き、安宿、旅行代理店、あやしい土産物屋などであふれている。しかし、それが幸いしてシャワー・トイレ付の比較的安い部屋（1泊8米ドル）をすぐに見つけることができた。 (続きを読む…)

Pokhara is a lake-side town about 6 hours by bus from Kathmandu. It is a calm and quiet town and a nice break from Kathmandu. The downside: this place too (the part actually by the lake, “lakeside”) is a tourist ghetto. The 4 or 5 Km strip by the lake is lined with guesthouses, tourist shops, and tourist-oriented restaurants (like the “7-11″). I mean, at times there are more tourists on the street than locals, and every local seems to be a tout for something or other.

湖畔の町ポカラは、カトマンドゥからバスで約6時間のところにある。ゆったりとした静かな町なので、カトマンドゥの喧噪を抜け出すにはちょうどいい場所である。ただ残念なのは、ポカラの町（特に「レイクサイド」という湖畔エリア）も「観光客地区」となっているところだ。湖沿いに続く4～5キロの道、ゲストハウス、観光客向けの店やレストランがずらりと並んでいて、道を歩いているのは地元人より観光客の方が多く、その地元人もほとんど客引きだ。 (続きを読む…)

Well, you learn something every day, right. Like Lumbini, Nepal is where Buddha was born. Yes, that Buddha. The town itself is a really small place with little to offer, but inside the neighbouring temple complex there is indeed a building housing ruins from the 3rd Century BC wherein there is a stone marking the exact spot where Buddha was born. It is pretty cool. Buddhists from all around the world come here on pilgrimage. A number of Buddhist countries have put up their own temples in homage. There are even temples built here to honour Buddha from France and Germany.

人間、生きていれば毎日学ぶことがあるものだが、ネパールのルンビニが、ブッダ、つまりお釈迦様の生誕の地だったとは知らなかった。ルンビニはのどかな田園地帯にある小さな町で、町自体にはほとんど何もないが、町の近くにある寺院エリアには紀元前3世紀の建物の遺跡があり、その中には、お釈迦様が誕生したまさにその場所を示す印が刻まれた石もある。世界中から仏教徒がこの地に巡礼に訪れ、日本を含む多くの仏教国がこの地区に寺院を建立している。中にはフランス寺やドイツ寺まである。 (続きを読む…)

Lumbini is quite close to the border with India, however there is no direct transport link from Lumbini to the border, meaning that you must first catch a local bus to the town of Bhaewara 25 Km away. The local bus was already to the brim full by the time it got to us in Lumbini. So we and the other passengers waiting at the only intersection of Lumbini went with our luggage to the roof of the bus for the journey. The bus rattled on at a good clip and went around curves such as to throw us around quite easily, but it was quite fun, the wind was refreshing, and we had a great view.

ルンビニはインドの国境に近いのだが、ルンビニとインド国境を直接結ぶ交通機関がないので、ルンビニからまずはローカルバスでバイワラという25キロほど離れた大きな町まで移動する。バイワラ行きのバスの中はすでに満員状態。なので、ルンビニのバス停で待っていた他の乗客と一緒に荷物を持ってバスの屋根の上に「乗車」した。バスはガタガタ道を猛スピードで進み、カーブのときは車体が斜めに傾くので、屋根の上はその辺のジェットコースターよりスリルがあって面白かったし、風が気持ちよく、上から眺める景色も良かった。
