Following the recent Chinese crackdown in the “autonomous” region of Tibet, we received many emails concerned about our safety. We thank everyone for that and note that we got out of Lhasa just before the trouble started.

We left Lhasa on the morning of 11 March. The road was crazy: a narrow strip of asphalt/gravel between a steep mountain face and very intimidating cliff. First stop was a Baiju temple in a small town called Gyangze. This is apparently a common first stop for Land Cruiser tours: foreigners seemed to be a common sight here.

We left Xigaze on the morning of 13 March. Again here we traversed very steep mountains near Mt Qomolangma (Everest), and broke the 5000 meter altitude marker. Up here in the clouds is the small town of Dingri.

We left Dingri on the morning of 14 March. The journey from Dingri to Zangmu was the steepest and the most hair-raising. The unpaved “road” snaked its way along precipitous cliffs, all the while throwing us like dolls about the cabin. There was some “construction” going on, and let me tell you there is nothing like passing a huge truck on the blind side of a curve overlooking the abyss. Fun stuff.

14日の朝、ディングリを出発した。ディングリからダムまでの道のりはこれまでで一番険しかった。ひやひやするような崖沿いの道であり、おまけに舗装されていないため、体が人形みたいにくねくねするほど揺れるのである。
